The compact C20 UP production system 27.09.2005
The C 20 UP continues the innovative 5-axis technology of Hermle machining centres in the Gantry design.
The highly productive 5-axis machining centre C20 UP is equipped with the PW 160 pallet changer and the 4-pallet storage, the ICS unit and the ZM 43 additional tool magazine. The C 20 UP has been designed for small and medium-sized workpieces. Its positional tolerances of less than 0.008 mm and torques of up to 200 Nm convert the C 20 UP to a high-precision and powerful production system - equally suited to single part production as to small-sized and medium-sized
series.
Overview of some of the advantages:
- Modified gantry design
- Mineral casting design
- Multifunctional table arrangement
- 3 axes in the workpiece, 2 axes in the workpiece
- Pickup magazine integrated in the basic body saving space
- Optimum chip ejection for dry machining
- Very good accessibility
- Easy to service
- Linear axes above the working area
- Collision protection with collision inquiry

Pallet clamping system for 3 pallets
The PW 160 (160 refers to the weight to be transported per side of the pallet changer) as adapted to the machine at the front and can be delivered either with or without a 4-pallet storage. In connection with the PW 160, a 5-axis machine is converted into a machining centre for fully automatic 5-axis machining, while continuing to guarantee access to the working area for manual work, such as setup or feeding individual parts.
The setup station is closed with a roll-up cover, which is traversed between the setup station and the pallet gripper when it is opened. This ensure that the operator is always outside the danger area. Per each side, the double gripper can transport a pallet of up 160 kg in weight (incl. the clamping device and the workpiece) from the setup station to the working area of the machining centre. The main advantage of this system is that 3 pallets can be handled simultaneously (reduction in setup time). If you select the pallet changer with additional 4-pallet storage, the pallet number will increase to 7, allowing the double gripper to feed pallets also to the storage or to remove them for machining. The pallet management software is integrated in the machine control and is available for both available control models, the iTNC 530 and the S 840D.
Clever details such as the moveable top for loading by crane, the ejector shaft equipped with a drawer for chips and cooling lubricant, and the setup station with manual rotation facilitate the daily routine on such a system.
The space required for the PW 160 pallet changer is only 3.5 m2 + 1 m2 for the additional 4-pallet storage. Thus, the space required for 7 pallets of max. pallet dimensions of 400 x 400 / Ø 500 mm is only 4.5 m2.
The basic body has been constructed by mineral casting design and gives the travelling, lifting and rotary axes of the double gripper the required stability for dynamic traverses and rotations. The pallet changer is constructed as a component, is transported completely in one piece and is installed free of foundation in front of the machine.
