Hermle announces slight upturn in incoming orders and sales in the first quarter of 2017

11.05.2017

Gosheim, 11 May 2017 – During the first three months of 2017, Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG won a number of new orders throughout the Group totalling €95.6 m. This is a 7.9% increase compared to the same period in 2016 (previous year €88.6 m). New domestic orders rose by 12.6% to €39.4 m (previous year €35 m), and orders from overseas grew by 4.9% to €56.2 m (previous year €53.6 m). The order backlog as of 31 March 2017 came to €102.3 m compared to €130.6 m on the same date in 2016, and €93.8 m at the end of 2016.

Production increased slightly during the period under review to help shorten delivery times. Compared to the same period in 2016, Hermle Group sales rose by 7.1% to €87 m (previous year €81.2 m) and earnings improved accordingly. While the company’s overseas business volume dropped by 10.7% to €42.5 m (previous year €47.6 m), thus returning to a normal level as expected, sales in Germany rose sharply by 32.4% to €44.5 m (previous year €33.6 m).

This better than expected development also helped to further cement Hermle’s healthy financial and assets position. The investment volume was much higher than in 2016 due to the company’s two large-scale projects, which are both going to plan. As previously reported, Hermle is currently enhancing its production capacity at the company’s headquarters in Gosheim (completion is planned for August 2017) and is also busy constructing a new production hall in the neighbouring district of Rottweil, where the production of machine beds is planned to commence in the second quarter of 2017.

On 31 March 2017, the number of Hermle employees had risen to 1,027 compared to 1.003 on the same date in 2016. In addition to giving a number of young employees full-time contracts after successfully completing their training and taking on new apprentices to fill the resulting vacancies, 2017 has also seen the hiring of employees for the new in-house production of mineral cast machine beds.

Successful Hermle Open House

Large crowds gathered at this year’s Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG Open House, which was held in Gosheim at the end of April. Roughly 2,700 visitors from 1,200 companies and more than 30 countries travelled to Gosheim to discover all there is to know about the latest development trends in the milling, milling-turning and additive manufacturing sectors at Hermle. Of particular interest were automation solutions that meet the requirements of Industry 4.0. This included a presentation of Hermle’s new HS flex handling system, which can be used to individually automate six different machine series.

Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG is one of the world's leading manufacturers of milling machines and machining centres. In 2016, the Company generated a Group-wide turnover of €394 m and an EBIT of €99.8 m. Owing to their high quality and precision, Hermle machine tools are used in high-tech sectors such as toolmaking and mould construction, medical technology, the optical industry, energy technology, the aircraft, automotive and motor sport industries including their subcontractors. Hermle shares are traded on the regulated Stuttgart and Frankfurt stock markets.
