Overview
The HERMLE MPA technology (metal powder application) is a highly innovative, unique manufacturing process that integrates additive and subtractive machining within a hybrid machine concept.
Our additive service encompasses the entire process – from the initial enquiry and additive material build-up based on the MPA process (metal powder application) to the defined delivery condition. MPA technology forms a key stage within a structured process chain that includes pre-processing, additive material build-up, specialised heat treatment, final machining and quality assurance.
The focus lies on a comprehensive feasibility study, clear data management with version control and a delivery condition as agreed – either fully machined or with a defined allowance.
Process overview
Step - 1
Enquiry and data check
We begin with your application and 3D CAD data. You are immediately assigned a dedicated contact person. We assess the feasibility, collaborate with you to define the target geometry/finished contour and establish reference surfaces for subsequent machining at your site.
Upon request, we provide a guide price based on the feasibility assessment. We also offer comparative thermal simulations (MPA component with additive features vs. conventional component) to evaluate improvements in thermal performance.
If development or testing work is required, this will already be clarified during the feasibility study. From this step onwards, a unique CAD version reference is assigned to ensure that quotation, order and production are all based on the same data set.
Step - 2
MPA design and quotation
We will work with you to finalise the component’s geometry (including MPA components) and prepare a quotation clearly specifying the CAD version reference, the delivery condition (fully machined or with a defined allowance), and the agreed documentation options. The distinction between the delivery contour and the finished contour is clearly described.
Step - 3
Order and order confirmation
Once your order has been received, we will confirm the dates and quantities and give the go-ahead for the start of production. This is based on the approved quotation, which defines a fixed CAD version and a specified delivery condition. The options and scope of documentation are already defined there.
Step - 4
Preparation of the basic raw material
Once the order has been placed, we create the production specifications and program the machining operations in our in-house CAM system. The base bodies are then prepared on our milling machining centres – using automated processes where required. Components are continuously measured and inspected throughout the entire process.
Step - 5
MPA manufacturing
The defined areas are manufactured additively in the agreed MPA setup. Application and milling are performed alternately according to the production specifications. Process parameters are monitored, recorded and stored ensuring full traceability down to individual components.
Step - 6
Heat treatment
We perform specialised heat treatment tailored to our customers’ requirements and specifications. Process and batch data are assigned to the component and documented.
Step - 7
Milling process and quality assurance
We mill the final contour or, depending on the agreement, leave a defined allowance (a few millimetres) for final finishing. Accompanying quality and process inspections ensure that the target geometry is achieved. Measurement and test results are reliably documented.
Step - 8
Delivery
Packaging, documentation and shipment take place as agreed.
